Online
credit files in the UK
The law states that whilst you cannot have
too much say about how your credit file is compiled, you are
certainly entitled to obtain a copy of it to read. And if it
transpires that there are errors in your file, you are entitled
to have them removed. Interestingly ... it is for you to prove
your innocence, the agencies will only correct errors if you
can prove that they are indeed errors. To get a copy you
can either write to Experian and Equifax, or to speed things
up you can order online.
Indeed, they were stubbornly slow to provide
any online credit files, but both of the above two agencies do
have websites. Experian will now allow you to order your credit
file on line. Experian's order form can be found at http://www.experian.co.uk
After much pressure, Equifax followed suit offering a similar
service and has finally adjusted to the online world. You can
now order your credit report online and receive it over the internet.
And not before time! The equifax online order page can be found
at https://www.econsumer.equifax.co.uk/consumer/uk The cost is
£8.25 and you need a credit card to make use of the service.
